Robert E. Lee himself was against the erection of confederate monuments. Regarding the erasing of history, I have a two good exemples. The first one is Philippe Pétain. He was a french general during WW1. He won the battle of Verdun and became the commander in chief that ultimately won the war. He was appointed Marshal of France and was a national hero. Streets and places were named after him, statues were erected. But it all disappeared. Because he singed the armistice with Hitler in 1940 and became a Nazi collaborator. Yet his role in both wars are still taught in class. People in France know who he is and what he did. Nazis are the second exemple. There's not a lot of Adolf Hitler streets but his legacy survives.

I love how conservatives claim to love the constitution or the declaration of independence but glorify people who actively went against the core principles of those documents. I thought this was the party of Lincoln? What happened to "Actually democrats were the ones who started the kkk."? The only people that are glorifying slave owners are conservatives right now. And the books are still there. There are records of the history still readily available. Perhaps more available than they have ever been.
